Small Season (Oct-Dec 2022)
The small crop located in the north of the Peru is finishing, the extended finish is due to the current temperatures and it is projected to finish in the third week of January. The volume from October to December of this season was 10,110 MT, a number similar to that projected in the previous newsletter. Of this total, only 3,134 MT (31%) was destined for the export market, the balance (69%) was destined for the domestic market. Likewise, as forecast, the volumes were not sufficient for the total existing demand.
Exports in numbers
From January to December 2022, passion fruit exports decreased by 18% in volume compared to the 2021 harvest; on the contrary, the exported value increased by 13%, because the average price was 39% higher than the 2021 harvest. The outstanding characteristic of this harvest was the high prices that skyrocketed due to the cost of the fruit, which went from being at 0.75 USD/Kg in the big harvest to 1.10 USD/Kg in the small harvest, this caused that prices in the last quarter 2022 were the highest of the year. As for the most affected categories in volume, there is the juice with seeds and the concentrate. On the other hand, the increase in the exported value has been considerable in the NFC juice with an increase of 24% in the exported value versus the previous harvest.
New Big Season 2023 (Jan-Aug)
The big passion fruit season in Peru will begin at the end of January, since due to climatic factors the sprouting process of the plantations was delayed by an average of 21 days; the harvest will start with a small volume that will gradually decrease week by week. The supply is still insufficient for the high-unsatisfied demand that exists in the international market, which could cause prices to remain high during the first months of the harvest and speculation to increase.
Thanks to the good prices obtained in 2022, the passion fruit harvest areas have increased from 4,500 ha to approximately 5,800 ha in 2023. Very important to remark that the areas already planted (4,500 ha) will be harvested from the end of January and September. And the new hectares (1300 ha) will be harvested from May to September, therefore, passion fruit volumes will be concentrated in the second peak, which would be the highest of the season this year, this situation is not usual since the first peak is generally the largest of the crop.
Regarding productivity, farmers in the fields project a growth in average yield due to greater investment.
Regarding quality, it is projected that the brix will be higher than in 2022 due to adequate fertilization and investment in the fields, this in turn will benefit the yield.
Conventional Passion Fruit
The harvest will start with small volumes, although it is projected that it will increase week by week, the first peak that used to be the highest of the campaign, will not be very high. For this reason, prices will not drop to their best range until the first quarter of the year. According to the projection, it is estimated that the first peak of the harvest will be in March, the second peak, which will be the highest, will occur between April-May and the third peak will occur in July.
As can be seen in the graph, the peak is late, this due to the climatic conditions with low temperatures that the plants suffered in the previous months.
In relation to the current prices of the fruit in the country, the levels got historical records due to the domestic market that is paying high prices to monopolize the little volume currently available.
Organic Passion Fruit
Regarding the evolution of organic passion fruit, the delay is more significant than conventional passion fruit, since the peak is approximately 30 days behind. In January and February, the total volume will be very low, while the first peak will be in March and the second and last peak will be in July.
